Loneliness and Hurt
An Alternative View
Adler said,' to get rid of one's problems, all.one can do is live in the universe all alone.' Of course, one doesn't have any problems then. Since most problems are of the people-interaction kind, then suffering is diminished.
But life is messy when you include people in the context. Just being alive is an interactive existence- potential for problems.
It's basically impossible to not get hurt in your relationships with other people. When you enter into interpersonal relationships, it is inevitable that to varying degrees you will get hurt and you will hurt someone too.
After all when you say Yes to someone or something, you will be saying No to someone else.
Of course that begs the next question, if one is all alone in the universe, then is one is naturally lonely?
But that's not true, since to be alone doesn't make you lonely.
Loneliness-- according to Adler ---is having other people and society and a community around you and having a deep sense of exclusion from them. To feel lonely we need other people in that context. i can understand that's how some small populated nations feel surrounded by vast and populous countries.
The above essay is based loosely on the book,
The Courage to be Disliked
