Bill Plotkin says it well in his provocative book Soulcraft: “The Western worldview says, in essence, that technological progress is the highest value and that we were born to consume, to endlessly use and discard natural resources, other species, technological gadgets, toys, and, often, other people.” If Plotkin is right, we’re not simply making an idol here or there, whether it be an idol of success or an idol of beauty. Rather, addiction is happening at the level of our society, impacting our very identities.
Quoted in the book by Chuck DeGroat, Toughest People to Love: How to Understand, Lead, and Love the Difficult People in Your Life—Including Yourself ( page 68).
