The British and Foreign Bible Society recently published a report titled "The Quiet Revival", which highlights surprising growth in church attendance in England and Wales, particularly among young adults.
Here's a summary of the key findings from the report:
* Church Growth: The report indicates that the Church in England and Wales is experiencing a period of rapid growth, challenging previous predictions of decline.
* Young Adults Leading the Way: This growth is primarily driven by young adults, especially young men.
* In 2018, only 4% of 18-24 year olds attended church at least monthly, which has risen to 16% today. For young men, this jumped from 4% to 21%.
* Young people are showing greater openness to spirituality and are the most likely group to pray regularly.
* Increased Diversity: The church in England and Wales is becoming more ethnically diverse, with one in five people (19%) coming from an ethnic minority. Nearly half of young Black people aged 18-34 (47%) are now attending church monthly.
* Bible Engagement: While general Bible reading rates have risen, particularly among churchgoers, there's still a significant need to deepen Bible confidence, especially among young Christians.
* Positive Impacts: Young people who attend church report higher life satisfaction, stronger community connections, and less anxiety and depression compared to non-churchgoers.
