Psychological Man Born To Be Pleased
The last couple of centuries in Western history have seen a massive shift away from religious belief to individualistic living. This change has many ramifications; one is about what it means to be human.
In the religious worldview, humanity was created by God but, has a broken nature and we seek God for healing and restoration.
In a secular atheistic world, we are masters of our own destiny and fulfilling our desires is our main aim.
Sociologist Philip Rieff reflected on this shift and wrote,
“Religious man was born to be saved. Psychological man was born to be pleased.”
When we become the centre of our own world it is very easy to make fulfilling personal desire our ultimate goal. I think experience reveals that this leads to a shallow and pointless way of living.
